Updating Cruise Ship Vocabulary

For full details about cruise line vocabulary - even if it is just to refresh your memory – find out more at http://www.prowsedge.com/cruise-advice-tips-vocabulary.html

In the meantime, here is a shorter highlight of some of those sea / shipboard words you might not necessarily encounter on land - starting with one very big NO NO!

NEVER refer to your cruise ship as a "boat".  A cruise ship is NEVER referred to as a boat - it is always a “ship”

Other basics include:

AT THE FRONT OF THE SHIP
bow – word used to refer to anything at the front of the ship
fore / forward – more words used to refer to anything at the front of the ship

AT THE BACK OF THE SHIP
aft – word used to refer to anything at the rear of the ship
stern – another word used to refer to anything at the rear of the ship

AT THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE SHIP
starboard – word used to refer to the right side of the ship

AT THE LEFT SIDE OF THE SHIP
port – word used to refer to the left side of the ship

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SHIP
midships – word used to refer to the middle of the ship

Over-eating on a Cruise

Prow’s Edge used to have a very popular chat room.  Sadly, because some computer web trouble makers  thought it fun to contaminate our website through the chat rooms and actually make the website unattainable, we have had to erase the chat rooms.

But we still have the posts on file and are able to share some of the fun ones with you now.

One of the most popular topics of conversation on our blog was about food and people who thought it was justified to eat three portions of everything - and more.

Here’s a look at some of what was said.

From: High Seas

We have seen so much gluttony on cruise ships it is obscene. On a Carnival Cruises forum passengers talk about how many entrees they can order on a cruise and proudly claim to ordering 3 or more lobster entrees on the Captain's dinner night. Pure greed.

From : Jack&Alice (New York)

Don’t think that greed and gluttony is restricted to the budget cruise lines. I was sailing with Regent, and there was a guy on board who would appear for breakfast every day, head for the buffet, and nab the extra large, “display-only” croissant that was perched at the top of the buffet display. For 4 days, the astonished dining room staff replaced the display croissant - then finally gave up. The cream topping to the story is that the guy then made a huge fuss that they were not providing his large croissant each morning. It takes all sorts!

From: JollyRoger

The breakfast buffet attract the worst in passengers, doesn’t it?. You think the guy who nabbed the display croissant every morning was greedy? Forget it. He runs a poor second to the many passengers who march the length of the buffet table piling the plate with fruit salad, fried eggs, bacon, sausage, hashbrowns with two pancakes perched on top and then pouring syrup over the lot. On ONE plate. No kidding! The travel agent probably didn’t alert them to the fact that they could go back a second time (or a third)?

From: Able Seaman
We’re just sick of watching people pile up their plates at the buffet and then leave a whole wack of food on the plate and get up for more, and do the whole thing all over again. This is not just greed : this is criminal waste.

From: Una (Florida)
You wonder why we’re a nation of obese people - go on a cruise and watch them there, and you won’t wonder anymore.

From: rickbend
And these are the very people, ordering 2 or three entrees and preparing a path to the cardiac unit who are screaming at me for smoking on the aft deck. These gluttons are going to be as much a drain on the National Health Service as I am, if not more. Greed AND hypocrisy.

From: BobT

Not sure how you work that one out, rickbend, but I get your point. Folks in glass houses etc.....

From: ejthompson

I am a member on two other cruise forums and I am astonished to read so many posts of people trying to justify their greed - even encouraging each other not to worry about what the dining room staff think when they order their banquet of gluttony.

We wonder why Americans have such a bad reputation as being loud and obnoxious when they're abroad. Can we be surprised. What else can the struggling serving staff on board the cruise lines think when they see overweight passengers ordering double portions of everything on sight - two entrees, sometimes even three - plates piled up with food at the buffets and only a portion of that being eaten, not one slice of cheesecake in the afternoon, but three, not to mention endless rounds of free ice cream, popcorn and chocolate. But the greed in of itself is not the worst part of it : it is the attempts to justify the greed that is truly obscene.

Watch out for our next blog in which we will continue to share with you these great and sometimes very funny blog posts.  And if you wish to make any comments below, please do so - we would love to hear from you.

Main Windjammer Fall Specials

Summer may be coming to a close, but the magic of Fall sailings with the Main Windjammer fleet is only just beginning – a time that is particularly perfect for Windjammer cruises  because  of the steady Autumn breezes, the unique Fall weather of warm, sunny days and cool evenings ideal for gatherings around the woodstove, the wealth of hawk and warbler sightings and the colorful foliage of this time of year.

Adding to the attraction of a Fall Windjammer Cruise this Fall are the value prices at 10 - 20 % less than the summer rates.

Special cruises include the popular 3 to 6 day WoodenBoat trips in September 11 that include a rendezvous at the WoodenBoat waterfront in Brooklin and a tour of the world-famous WoodenBoat School, and the Labor Day Weekend events when the  entire fleet congregates in Camden for a Parade of Sail, live outdoor music, schooner crew talent show, fireworks and more.

Fall specialty cruises cover everything from wine-tasting, puffin-scouting, lighthouse touring, and knitting to even lobster feasts and bacon lover’s cruise.

Norwegian Cruise Line Legends in Concert

One of the highlights of a cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line on board Norwegian Epic starting in November are the Legends in Concert performances in which tribute artists perform as some of the world's most recognized entertainers – Michael Jackson, Donna Summer and Jimmy Buffet.

Originating in Las Vegas, a  favorite show on the Las Vegas center strip for over 25 years, Legends in Concert is the pioneer of live tribute shows and has assembled the greatest collection of live tribute artists and celebrity look alikes in all of show business.

"Our guests absolutely love the Legends in Concert performances on board Norwegian Epic. The next round of tribute artists, Michael Jackson, Donna Summer and Jimmy Buffet, three extraordinary performers, are destined to be fan favorites," said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line's chief executive officer.  "With Norwegian Epic returning to its home port in Miami, this is the perfect time to introduce these three talented performers to guests sailing to the Caribbean."

Legends in Concert on Norwegian Epic features three celebrity tribute performers taking the stage in the Epic Theater for six 45-minute shows over three days during a seven-day cruise.

In addition, a Legends “Unplugged” show is performed on three additional nights in the Manhattan Room, the ship's New York-inspired supper club, providing an unprecedented dining and entertainment experience.

The celebrity performers change every four months, keeping the show fresh and exciting.

Disney Cruise Line's Disney Fantasy

Dwain Wall, Senior Vice President and General Manager of CruiseOne, the nation’s leading cruise retailer, recently returned from Disney Fantasy’s inaugural sailing. Below are his thoughts:

This ship is fit for travelers of all ages.
Multigenerational groups should look no further than Disney Fantasy, given the diversity of onboard activities and dining options. Disney has really worked hard to incorporate elements of each family member’s dream vacation onboard Fantasy. The show Wishes is a production appropriate for all ages. The private, adults-only areas of the ship are an especially nice retreat. Castaway Cay is an amazing private island oasis that only Disney could create, with bicycling, swimming with stingrays, character encounters, age-specific play areas and more. I was especially impressed by the beach wheelchairs Disney offers, which make shore excursions accessible and ensure every family member can participate in the fun.

A meal is no longer just a meal.
When guests sit down to dine at the Animator’s Palate restaurant, they immediately become engaged in creative, unique ways. Disney has taken the traditional family dinner and turned it into a 360-degree experience. Children – as well as adults – have the chance to interact with animators through dinner, who draw images that instantly come alive on the walls of the restaurant. This interactive experience is something incredible to watch as it comes to life and will take any cruiser’s vacation to the next level.

Evening entertainment is absolutely unprecedented.
Evenings aboard Fantasy are enchanting. The fireworks display that lights up the Caribbean – which is choreographed to everyone’s favorite Disney tunes – is an exciting magical Disney moment at sea.

Disney Fantasy is a unique opportunity for corporate and incentive travel.
CruiseOne will be celebrating our 20th anniversary and our first-ever joint land and sea National Conference aboard Disney Dream is this fall. After experiencing all that Disney brings to group travel onboard the Fantasy inaugural, I am excited to see what we are able to do for our network of travel professionals, vendors and partners.

NCL Design Award

Norwegian Cruise Line is the first in the cruise industry to be honored by Travel + Leisure, the popular guide for world travelers with the largest audience of any travel magazine, with its distinguished Design Award. The recipients of the seventh annual award represent the best new examples of design in a range of categories from hotels and transportation to luggage and travel fashion.

Norwegian Epic was awarded “Best Transportation” for its innovative Studio staterooms, a private key-card access complex on two decks consisting of 128 staterooms and the Studio Lounge.

The concept was pioneered by Norwegian and designed and priced specifically for solo travelers, allowing them the comfort and convenience to travel without the industry’s single supplement cruise price. Priestmangoode, a design firm in the United Kingdom, designed the Studios for Norwegian.

“The Studio staterooms on Norwegian Epic have been extremely well received and we are pleased to be able to offer solo traveler’s an opportunity to visit great destinations while experiencing Freestyle Cruising on board our most innovative ship,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer.

Each Studio stateroom, at approximately 100 square feet of living space, features a contemporary design with a full-size bed and separate areas for the bathroom, sink and shower.

In addition, guests in the Studios have private access to the exclusive Studio Lounge. Here, guests can grab a cup of coffee in the morning, meet up with fellow cruisers and plan their day or relax with a drink in the evening. Since many of the Studio staterooms are connecting, there is also the opportunity for friends to travel together while giving each their own private space.

PRINCESS OFFERS RELIEF OF ALL KINDS - not just a hot shower and a square meal

We all tend to take things for granted - like hot water and a shower every morning. But can you imagine how welcome hot water, a decent meal and showers must have been for a shift of refreshed Red Cross relief workers aboard the Sun Princess in Pago Pago, American Samoa.

When Star Princess and Sun Princess called in Apia, Samoa and Pago Pago, American Samoa this past weekend, the ships brought along not only a brief respite for the Red Cross relief workers, but also some much needed relief supplies and more than $10,000 in donations for the region that was recently hit with a powerful tsunami.

The ships off-loaded pallets of bottled water, sugar, flour, linens and clothing donated by passengers and crew, plus treats of candy and chocolate for the children. In addition, in Pago Pago, both ships welcomed Red Cross relief workers onboard for some relief of their own, with hot showers, use of the ships’ laundries, phone calls home and lunch.

The ship captains informed local officials that the Princess Cruises Community Foundation is donating $10,000 to the Red Cross for relief efforts in Samoa and American Samoa.

The ships also conducted their own fundraising for the relief efforts, including donations from their Crew Club funds, contributions received from passengers and crew, and money raised from auctions of the ships’ navigational charts used during the cruises.

In Apia, the Honorable Misa Telfoni, the minister of tourism and deputy prime minister, was touched by the generosity of Princess Cruises. He made particular mention of the Princess crew and their donation which he described as “random acts of kindness and love” which would greatly assist in the recovery and renewed growth of the area.
