Entertainment on a cruise

Depending on your experience of cruise travel and what’s usually on offer in your home town, entertainment on cruise ships can either thrill you or appall you.

If you live in New York, for example, and have seen all the latest shows, nothing on board any cruise ship is going to satisfy you. If you live in the heart of the midwest and haven’t seen a decent show in a long time, almost anything offered by the major cruise lines will probably make your trip a very memorable one.

The entertainment you’re going to be offered depends entirely on the type of cruise line you will be sailing with, and whether you enjoy it or not depends entirely on your experience of entertainment and what is offered at home – and of course your personal taste in what makes “quality” entertainment.

The contemporary or budget cruise lines that are continuously recognized for their entertainment are Royal Caribbean International who is often cited as offering the best in entertainment, Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival. They offer everything from Broadway shows to nightly presentations inspired by today's popular theatre hits that pay tribute to show biz greats and musical eras.

Premium cruise lines such as Princess, Celebrity and Holland America showcase less elaborate productions but feature celebrity performers and leading popular musicians on selected sailings.

The more luxury of the cruise lines, such as Silversea, Crystal, Regent Seven Seas and Seabourn offer an even higher standard of entertainment and very often present local and regional folkloric troupes on board for performances that are designed to enhance the destination experience.

These cruise lines tend to offer another step up the ladder with stars of classical music as well as the “easy listening” alternatives.

Other cruise lines like those on rivers or the Arctic offer very different entertainment as well.

If cruise ship entertainment is important to you, study the brochures and their web sites very thoroughly to make sure you won’t be disappointed in what is on offer.

Most cruise lines feature smaller lounges and showrooms where cruisers can enjoy cabaret singers, classical quartets and piano recitals. Again, the quality of the performers tends to match the tastes of the majority of passengers that each cruise line caters for.

Depending on the cruise line you sail with, cruise ship entertainment has become much more sophisticated and choices of the type of entertainment on offer is much wider than before.

Cruise Weddings

Having your wedding on a cruise is becoming an even more popular option than ever before.

And there are many reasons for this.

The first and more obvious is that combing your cruise with your wedding offers you the choice of organizing two distinct and very different actual weddings.  One at sea with the roar of the sea behind you as you complete your vows, or one at one of the destinations  - maybe even a tropical beach.  And nothing can be more romantic that that.

Another reason for planning your cruise as the ideal home for your wedding means that your wedding will involve a lot LESS stress than it would entail were you doing it at home. The cruise lines take care of everything, from the flowers to the champagne, to the place on the ship or the location on the shore.

And, very often, a cruise at sea is a cheaper deal than the 500-guest reception in your home town. Yes, you are paying for a cruise, but you would have paid something for a honeymoon, anyway, and generally the marriage at sea is a private affair, so no costs for huge grand weddings packed with friends and relatives you probably won’t see again for many years.

If the wedding on the cruise IS to be attended by family, this too is not going to be added to your wedding account. Sometimes it could be a treat even for close friends and relatives.  And sometimes it does cost something to bring someone you love who really cannot afford the trip.

Also making things relatively easy, most cruise lines are very well organized now to make weddings at sea very easy to create events.  Some cruise lines have their own wedding coordinators. Some, however, do not encourage such events. Some, like Crystal Cruises and Cunard do not even allow them take place. The distinctly luxurious and up-market cruise lines do not offer any special packages or services.

Those cruise lines that do offer the chance to have you wedding on your cruise include

Princess Cruses who offer what is considered to be the best selection of events and offerings of service, Disney Cruise Line who offers something a little different to the very much more adult stressed themes of other cruise ship  weddings, Norwegian Cruise Line which offers what is considered to be the widest range of packages, and Carnival Cruise Line who also offers a wide range of options.

Planning your wedding on a cruise really is one of the easiest ways to go about the whole process.  And, very often it is one of the cheaper options too.

100th Birthday on Norwegian Sky

Norwegian Sky had a lot to celebrate last week. On January 1, 2012, the ship rang in the New Year and the 100th birthday of Mrs. Zara Holtz.

Mrs. Holtz, originally from Queens, NY, now residing in Fort Lauderdale, FL, was sailing on board Norwegian Sky with her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. She was not expecting a birthday celebration on board, especially one as large as this. To help her commemorate her 100th birthday, Norwegian Sky’s more than 2,000 guests were invited to the pool deck for a special sail away party. There, they witnessed Master Ice Carver Ronaldo carve an enormous block of ice into a huge “100.” Then, Mrs. Holtz was brought on stage, presented with a birthday cake and saluted by her fellow guests, officers and crew who sang “Happy Birthday” in her honor.

This celebration came as a complete surprise to Mrs.Holtz and her family. When asked to say a few words to the crowd, she stated that at no point in her life would she have expected to live up to 100 and wished everyone the same. A former travel agent, Mrs. Holtz has traveled a great deal, and she closed her speech by saying she wished everyone could be sailing on their birthday, and if they do, it should only be on board Norwegian Cruise Line.

Following her pool deck celebration, Mrs. Holtz and her family were invited by the Captain, officers and crew to a special birthday dinner in Cagney’s Steakhouse. While dining, Mrs. Holtz thanked Jean-Michel Dhélin, Norwegian Sky’s hotel director, and told him that although she has travelled a lot in the past, Norwegian Sky and her crew provided the very best cruise experience she could recall to date!

Norwegian Cruise Lines has jumped the gun on the cruise industry’s traditional Wave Season – the period between January and March when savvy cruisers cash in on great cruise deals.

Traditionally there’s more than low prices on offer. To celebrate Wave Season cruise lines sweeten the pot with mouth-watering perks, among them credits for shipboard spending, free cabin/suite upgrades, free airfares and early booking discounts.

Norwegian Cruise Line To Raise Fares

Norwegian Cruise Line today announced that it plans to raise cruise fares up to ten percent on April 1, 2011.

The cruise line has also announced, however, that the company also announced it will extend its “Free Upgrades For All” Sales Event through March 31, 2011.

This popular Wave Season promotion provides up to a four-category upgrade on select sailings, along with e-coupons in on-board savings of up to $400. This extension will give those planning to book a cruise extra time to take advantage of this offer prior to price increases which will take effect on April 1, 2011.

“We’ve seen exceptional demand spurred by our Wave Season promotion, particularly for the popular summer destinations. In fact, we surpassed our weekly booking record three times in the last eight weeks,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer. “Based on this demand, we will increase our fares on April 1. We wanted to give consumers and travel agents the opportunity to take advantage of these offers before the price increase.”

NCL Design Award

Norwegian Cruise Line is the first in the cruise industry to be honored by Travel + Leisure, the popular guide for world travelers with the largest audience of any travel magazine, with its distinguished Design Award. The recipients of the seventh annual award represent the best new examples of design in a range of categories from hotels and transportation to luggage and travel fashion.

Norwegian Epic was awarded “Best Transportation” for its innovative Studio staterooms, a private key-card access complex on two decks consisting of 128 staterooms and the Studio Lounge.

The concept was pioneered by Norwegian and designed and priced specifically for solo travelers, allowing them the comfort and convenience to travel without the industry’s single supplement cruise price. Priestmangoode, a design firm in the United Kingdom, designed the Studios for Norwegian.

“The Studio staterooms on Norwegian Epic have been extremely well received and we are pleased to be able to offer solo traveler’s an opportunity to visit great destinations while experiencing Freestyle Cruising on board our most innovative ship,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer.

Each Studio stateroom, at approximately 100 square feet of living space, features a contemporary design with a full-size bed and separate areas for the bathroom, sink and shower.

In addition, guests in the Studios have private access to the exclusive Studio Lounge. Here, guests can grab a cup of coffee in the morning, meet up with fellow cruisers and plan their day or relax with a drink in the evening. Since many of the Studio staterooms are connecting, there is also the opportunity for friends to travel together while giving each their own private space.
